Welcome to Vergennes

Nestled along the banks of Otter Creek, Vergennes is proud to be Vermont’s oldest city—yet it remains as lively and welcoming today as ever. With more than 200 years of history, Vergennes’ story is beautifully preserved in the striking architecture that lines Main Street and surrounds its picturesque city green.

Downtown Vergennes blends historic charm with modern energy. An eclectic mix of locally owned shops, restaurants, and galleries offer some of the finest shopping and dining experiences in New England—all just steps from one another. A short stroll from the heart of downtown brings you to scenic parks along Otter Creek, where walking paths, picnic areas, waterfall views, and boating docks invite you to slow down and stay awhile.

We invite you to discover Vergennes and explore its rich heritage through our self-guided Historic Sites Walking Tour. Whether you're here to relax and unwind or to seek out new adventures, you'll quickly see why Vergennes is known as the “Little City with the Big Heart.” You can also enjoy the virtual tour.
