Bixby Library: One of the most remarkable examples of architecture in the State of Vermont, replete with stained glass dome and iconic columns inside and out. Bixby Library has a large collection of Vermontiana and a museum collection of native artifacts. Community computers, WiFi (and books, of course!) are available for your convenience.
Vergennes Opera House: Built in 1897, this acoustically rich and lovingly restored theater sits in the heart of historic downtown Vergennes and offers a year-round schedule of musical and theater performances.
Lake Champlain Maritime Museum: Discover Lake Champlain's history through exhibits, nautical archaeology, replica vessels and daily hands-on experiences. LCMM is situated on a beautiful lakeside location next door to Basin Harbor.
Rokeby Museum: Discover this National Historic Landmark and its current exhibit - Seeking Freedom, The Underground Railroad and the Legacy of an Abolitionist Family. Tour the 1814 house, stroll the beautiful grounds and visit nine historic farm buildings.
Chimney Point: This historic site on Lake Champlain is one of the earliest, most intensely settled, and most strategic sites in the Champlain Valley, with human habitation dating back as far as 9,000 years ago. Exhibits and special events present the story of the three early cultures in the region - Native American, French Colonial and early American.
Sheriff Stephen Bates Day, October 3: Stephen Bates was elected Sheriff and appointed Chief of Police in Vergennes in 1879 becoming Vermont’s first known elected black sheriff and chief of police. Governor Phil Scott signed a proclamation declaring October 3rd as Sheriff Stephen Bates Day.
